NYS Alumni welcomes parliamentary motion calling for structured employment of NYS graduates

Admin NYS Alumni welcomes parliamentary motion calling for structured employment of NYS graduates

The National Youth Service Alumni welcomes the Motion by Kilifi County MP, Hon. Gertrude Mbeyu, backed by Members of the National Assembly on 14 October 2026, seeking a policy framework to facilitate the employment of NYS graduates in government institutions and private security firms.

The Alumni views this Motion as an important step towards addressing the longstanding challenge of unemployment among NYS graduates and ensuring that the country’s investment in their training translates into meaningful employment. With approximately 18,000 young people graduating from the NYS annually, a structured transition from training to employment is essential to unlocking their potential and strengthening national productivity.

NYS Alumni calls for the adoption of a clear, enforceable policy framework that prioritises qualified NYS graduates for supplementary security roles in government ministries, departments and agencies, as well as in the private security sector. The framework should establish transparent recruitment procedures, minimum training standards, fair remuneration, appropriate deployment, career progression and accountability mechanisms.

We further urge the Government to develop a comprehensive NYS graduate exit and employment strategy that extends beyond security services, connecting graduates to opportunities that match their technical, vocational and professional qualifications. Such a framework would recognise the diversity of skills acquired through NYS training and provide pathways into engineering, telecommunications, automotive technology, ICT, environmental conservation and other relevant sectors.

The Alumni commends Hon. Gertrude Mbeyu and the Members of Parliament who supported the Motion for advancing this important national conversation. We urge Parliament and the relevant government ministries to translate the Motion into concrete policy and implementation measures, with clear targets, institutional responsibilities and mechanisms for monitoring graduate absorption.

Our position is clear: NYS training must lead to structured pathways into employment, economic independence and national service. The young people who have undergone disciplined training deserve a fair opportunity to contribute their skills to the nation and build sustainable livelihoods.
